The need for C17

The world’s most urgent development challenges are also risk challenges. Climate shocks, financial insecurity, health emergencies, and protection gaps can quickly reverse social and economic progress. No single sector can address these challenges alone. C17 connects universities, industry, governments, and civil society to turn actuarial research, risk expertise, and practical experience into solutions that strengthen resilience, inclusion, and sustainable development.

What is C17?

The Consortium of Excellence for the 17 Goals (C17) is an international collaboration founded by four professors: Séverine Arnold of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland; Corina Constantinescu of the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom; and Ida Ferrara and Edward Furman of York University, Canada. Today, C17 is coordinated by the RISC Foundation.

Drawing on actuarial science, economics, mathematics, risk management, and insurance, C17 advances research, education, and dialogue in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It connects academic rigour with practical experience so that knowledge can inform policy and strengthen resilience.
