RISC Junior Scholar Colloquium: Mohsen Selseleh
The Risk and Insurance Studies Centre (RISC) is pleased to present the next session of the RISC Junior Scholar Colloquium, featuring Mohsen Selseleh, a Sessional Lecturer in Data Science at George Brown College.
Recent financial literature has examined the close relationship between external aggregate credit risk and trade disruptions. External shocks such as tariffs, particularly those introduced during the 2016 to 2020 period, have significantly impacted the Canadian steel industry. These trade policy reforms, combined with various financial disruptions, have intensified credit risk within the sector.
Research indicates that credit distress in this period was closely linked to increased import prices and supply chain instability, which, in turn, weakened the credit profiles and financial stability of Canadian steel companies. By analyzing short-term disruptions and financial hardship in import-dependent industries, this study highlights the underlying drivers of financial fragility in response to trade shocks.
The findings suggest that changes in financial vulnerability are driven more decisively by external shocks than by internal industry characteristics. This presentation offers an in-depth empirical view of how global trade shocks shaped the credit profiles of Canadian steel firms between 2016 and 2020, providing valuable insights into the intersection of trade policy, risk, and credit distress.
This engaging session is open to all who are interested in risk management, data science, and the financial implications of global trade.
