REaL Camp: Decision-Making in Risk for High School Students

The Risk and Insurance Studies Centre (RISC), in collaboration with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), is offering an engaging opportunity for high school students to explore the world of risk and uncertainty. The REaL Camp: Decision-Making in Risk will take place virtually on October 4 and 5, 2025, providing an immersive weekend of learning, collaboration, and friendly competition.

Designed for students in Grades 9 to 12, the camp will be led by PhD scholars and developed by a panel of academic and industry experts. Through interactive sessions and games, participants will gain a deep understanding of how to approach uncertainty, assess risk, and make informed decisions. The camp culminates in the Risk Olympics, an exciting team-based challenge where students apply their new skills in creative ways.

The program will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (EDT) each day. The cost is CAD $125 plus HST per student, but financial assistance is available, making the camp free of charge for students from equity-seeking groups.

During the weekend, participants will:

  • Explore concepts of risk and uncertainty through engaging, hands-on activities.
  • Build valuable leadership and decision-making skills that strengthen college applications.
  • Collaborate with peers who share similar academic interests.
  • Compete in the Risk Olympics for a chance to earn special recognition.

Upon completion, students will receive a Risk and Uncertainty digital badge, a Risk and Uncertainty Champion certificate, and gain exclusive access to future camps offered by RISC. Winners of the Risk Olympics will also receive awards recognizing their achievements. Beyond these tangible benefits, students will acquire future-ready knowledge and skills while forming meaningful new connections with peers across Canada.

The REaL Camp is part of the Risk Education and Literacy (REaL) Program, proudly supported by NSERC’s PromoScience Grant. This initiative aims to empower young learners to understand and navigate the complex challenges of today’s world, such as cyber threats, climate change, and global health risks.

Interested students must register by October 1, 2025.
